The game of cricket has been plagued with T20 action off-late due to the ongoing Indian Premier League. Amidst all the glitz and glamour of white ball cricket, a classic day of Test match cricket at Lord???s served as a breath of fresh air.

The highly anticipated English summer of cricket finally kicked off with visitors, Pakistan, taking on the Three Lions for a two-match series in whites.

After winning the toss on a typical overcast day at Lord???s, England elected to bat first to post a match-winning total.

However, the move to bat first backfired almost instantly in the first hour of the day as Pakistani bowlers enjoyed the seaming conditions the pitch had to offer.

Mohammad Abbas initiated England???s downfall with the wicket of Mark Stoneman. What followed was a riveting spell from Hassan Ali, who picked up big fishes Joe Root and Dawid Malan in quick successions.

In no time, Pakistan was reduced to 43-3, before Alastair Cook and Jonny Bairstow consolidated the innings with their crucial 57 run partnership.

Cook, who equaled the record for the most number of consecutive games played in Test Cricket (153), scored a trademark knock of 70, frustrating the Pakistani bowlers with his defense and classy strokeplay.

He anchored the English innings and entertained the crowd by smashing 14 boundaries during his knock. However, Faheem Ashraf broke the dangerous looking partnership by dismissing Bairstow.

Stokes continued to play in IPL mode for his quick 38, which consisted of five boundaries and a six. But, Mohammad Amir curtailed Cook vigil at the crease with an absolute beauty which kissed the off-stump.

Debutant Jos Buttler then joined his Rajasthan Royals partner Ben Stokes to score only a run-a-ball 14, before a rush of blood took his wicket. His temperament at the highest level remains doubtful, post the brief knock.

In no time, Pakistan bundled out England by picking up the last five wickets within a span of 19 runs. England could not even survive 60-overs in the day, which left the purist fuming in London.

Mohammad Abbas and Hassan Ali were the architects of Pakistani dominance throughout the day as they ended up with four-wickets each. Abbas conceded only 23 runs in his 14 overs to be adjudged as the bowler of the day.
