England vs West Indies 2020, 2nd Test, Day 1 – Twitter Reactions
Published - 17 Jul 2020, 02:06 AM | Updated - 23 Aug 2024, 09:48 AM
England, on the back of a dodged 126-run-stand [off 309 balls] between Dom Sibley [86* off 253 balls] and Ben Stokes [59* off 159 balls], have asserted themselves into a position of strength, finishing the day at 3-207 on what was an attritional day of Test match cricket.
Earlier, West Indies skipper won the toss and on a wet day in Manchester decided to put the English team in. West Indies retained the same team that beat England by four wickets at Southampton.
England, on the other hand, were jolted even before the match had commenced when it emerged that Jofra Archer breached the bio-secure protocols and had to be dropped from the Test. England opted to drop Joe Denly and replaced the three premium fast bowlers in James Anderson, Mark Wood, and Jofra Archer with Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, and Sam Curran.
Unlike the 1st Test, West Indies’ opening bowlers in Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel failed to make the most of the conditions. Both Burns and Sibley saw off the majority of the rain-curtailed first session but Jason Holder pulled off a masterstroke just at the stroke of Lunch when he introduced Roston Chase.
Joe Root and Dom Sibley then proceeded to stitch a 52-run-stand for the 3rd wicket and with Shannon Gabriel hobbling off the ground due to injury, it presented a great opportunity for the pair to stick a long partnership.

But Alzarri Jospeph once again proved to be the nemesis for the England captain. Joseph went on to dismiss Root for a record fourth time since the start of 2019 when he induced Root to go for a wild drive outside the off-stump, giving a simple catch to skipper Holder in the slip-cordon.

Gritty Dom Sibley and disciplined Ben Stokes grind the West Indies in the dust to help England take a position of ascendency
Sibley and Stokes started the post-Tea session from where they had left as England maintained a watchful approach. Sibley, who showed remarkable patience throughout the day, finally got to his second half-century of the series, after having spent 218 minutes at the crease.
With the partnership threatening to take the game away from the visitors, Holder brought Shannon Gabriel back into the attack and the move very nearly paid dividends when he induced a rare bad shot from Sibley [68] but for the skipper’s dropped catch at second slip.
The dropped chance was a microcosm of what was a lackluster day for the West Indies as far as discipline is concerned. And, post that the, we saw a lot more of it, as several lapses in the field followed.
Stokes went on to compile a 119-ball 50 and Sibley continued to grind the Windies attack. And, he, along with Dom Sibley, complied the longest 4th wicket-stand for the home side [in terms of ball faced] since December 2012 in Nagpur at Stumps on Day 01.
