England Women's Team Rewarded With Bumper Pay Rise After World Cup Triumph
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took yet another significant step for the betterment of their women cricket team. After witnessing a big success last year that saw the team winning the One-day International World Cup at home. The Board is taking every possible step to build on that particular success.
They have already announced the standalone Women’s World Twenty20 in November. And before that, the English Board has handed the team another significant boost.
Ahead of the international summer, which begins in Worcester on Saturday (June 9) as England take on South Africa in the first of three ODIs, the ECB has announced England Women squad have been given a significant pay rise.
So much so, the prime reason behind the pay rise is the World Cup triumph last year.
The new deals were activated on February 1 and run until the end of 2019. With 40 percent added to the overall payment pot and 10 top players receiving increases of more than 50 percent.
Reports are also suggesting that there will also be new payments. It would be regarding bonuses for the series win – a first in the women’s game.
Director of Cricket Clare Connor made it clear that the board is working to close the pay procedure between the men and women with urgency.
“At the moment it’s not about equal pay [for women]. But we should be bold and demonstrate a commitment to closing that gap with a bit of urgency,” said Connor.
Conor also said the aim is to ensure that the England women players have their 2017 salaries doubled by the time the 2021 World Cup comes around.
“The objective is to get to a situation in 2020 – when the new investment in the game kicks in. Whereby the players are paid double. They were paid when they won the World Cup. It’s the direction of travel that’s important,” she said.
“We have also introduced a bonus pot for series wins for the first time,” she concluded.
