It has been a sensational IPL for Chennai Super Kings so far. They have some exceptional brand of cricket which has helped them remain at the top of the points table with 5 victories from 6 games. The form of their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been the talking point of the franchise. He played a terrific knock of 70 of just 34 deliveries against the Royal Challengers Bangalore which eventually helped them chase down a mammoth total of 206 down in the final over.

All the players have come in handy in one match or the other. When Rayudu hasn’t performed, his partner Shane Watson has stepped up. The form of Rayudu has also kept them in the right stead as the tournament progress. However one can only guess that would have the tournament panned out for Chennai had they lost the opening match to the Mumbai Indians.

Had Chennai not won that match, the points table would have looked quite different. Mumbai Indians who are currently struggling in the tournament would have definitely found themselves in a better position. Fortunately for Chennai, it was a blistering knock of 68 of just 30 deliveries which helped Chennai clinch a nerve-wracking thriller from the jaws of defeat.

He has been arguably the best death bowler in the tournament for years. Dhoni has more than not get to him in a crunch situation and the man from the Caribbean has delivered on most occasions. Without his resources, CSK’s death bowling doesn’t look strong enough. On occasions, he has taken up the responsibility single-handedly and has delivered for his skipper and his franchise.

CSK bowling consultant Eric Simmons gave an insight into the different ways that Bravo helps the team in several situations. “He is an incredibly experienced cricketer. We were dead and buried against Mumbai last time we played them and he played one of the greatest T20 innings I’ve ever seen. I didn’t think we were going to win it and even MS (Dhoni) spoke about damage limitation,” said Simmons.

Simmons further added that Bravo controls the game in the middle and the death overs of a T20 innings barring helping other bowlers with his mentorship.  “His ability in those middle overs when we need some control, bowling to his field is wonderful to watch. The number of balls he bowls that go down the ground for one or to the square for one, he exactly knows what is going to happen.

“A component, that you don’t witness, is the mentoring he does for our young bowlers. He does a lot of talking, a lot of advising. It is not necessarily a perfect dot ball and he is very good at advising youngsters on where to bowl and make sure they bowl to their field. He plays three roles for our team.”
