South Africa is a team that is currently in a rebuilding phase. After a forgettable 2019 ODI World Cup, the proteas have started to give more and more chances to young guns. The problem with this approach is that the inexperience in the team tends to haunt them back.
This was largely evident in the recently-concluded Test series against England, where South Africa despite winning the first Test, were beaten comprehensively by a clinical English team.
The Proteas suffered three consecutive defeats owing largely to their new-look bowling attack and mediocre batting lineup.
However, all is not lost, not at least in the opinion of skipper du Plessis, who acknowledged his team’s weak performances but called for people to have patience with the young team.

Faf Du Plessis calls for calm after crunching 3-1 defeat against England:
Speaking after the final Test in Wanderers, the South African skipper urged people to give some time for his young players to settle in.
“That’s the reality of where we sit. We’ve put some good things in place with the strong, experienced coaching team. We know that, through time, they will guide players,” he said. ”But the experience we are lacking now will also take time.”
The 35-year-old believes his side will only get stronger with time, given their talent is there for all too see, all that’s lacking there is experience.
He added, “We need guys to come into Test cricket and just shine. I think we’ve had nine debutants in eight Test matches … and it just shows where we are. We’re a team that will take time.”
Du Plessis himself has come under the scanner after his mediocre performances against England.
For the whole series, the Proteas skipper could only score 21, 20, 1, 19, 8, 36, 3 and 35. He expressed his disappointment after the series loss but called for calm at the same time.
The attention now shifts to white-ball cricket, where the first ODI between South Africa and England scheduled to be played on the 4th of February at Cape Town.
