South Africa have been dominating the Test series against Pakistan. But there is some shocker coming in for the hosts. Skipper Faf du Plessis has been suspended from the third and final Test, beginning from January 11 at the Wanderers. He has been found guilty of slow overrate during Proteas’ nine-wicket win against Pakistan in the second Test.

Faf du Plessis out of final Test
The skipper has been slapped with a fine of 20 per cent match fee while the entire team were fined 10 per cent of their match fees. The slow over rate may well be due to the fact that the hosts went with all pace attack. As we know, pacers often take time to get to their un-up, unlike spinners who cover short yards. Almost 122 overs were being bowled by the seamers, making things hectic for the skipper and his team. On top of that, an extra half an hour was added to each of the first three days of the Test.

Proteas eye stand-in skipper
The Proteas may choose between Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram. Opener Amla took a blow to his biceps and was retired hurt. On the other hand, Markram sustains bruises and sat out during the later stages of the game. In accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

The charges against the skipper were laid by on-field umpire Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson apart from third umpire S.Ravi. Du Plessis was earlier cautioned after being found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during the Centurion Test against India in January. This was his second offence in relation to over-rate within 12 months.
