Fake news has been a growing trend in India with the emergence of the ruling party Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and now former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is under the radar of such rumours.

Meanwhile, a fake news of Ganguly joining BJP has gone viral on the internet.

A Facebook page called ‘Paschim Bange BJP Chai’ (We want BJP in West Bengal) shared a post claiming Ganguly has joined the party. The caption of the post was in Bengali.

Former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly joins BJP and PM Narendra Modi’s sabka saath sabka vikas agenda. Today is a day of celebration ……let’s share the news,” here’s the translated post.

Although, the truth is far away from it. Ganguly, who is the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has not joined BJP yet.

However, this is not the first time Ganguly’s name has come forward with a political party. Thanks to his popularity in the country and all over the world, Ganguly is a renowned personality in Bengal.

Previously, all the ruling parties have tried to rope in the Prince of Calcutta for their own political mileage.

But on all these occasions, Ganguly was absolutely firm on its stand of not joining any political party. He has always kept himself away from it, and he continues to do so.

Yes, the BJP did make an offer. However, I have declined it. I won’t be contesting the elections,” he said after the 2014 invitation.

Sourav Ganguly further added that his place is on the cricket field and not parliament.

The 45-year-old Ganguly played 311 One-day Internationals and 113 Tests between 1992 and 2008 for India. He scored 11,363 runs in 50-over format followed by 7,212 runs in 188 innings of in the Test fold.
