Shikhar Dhawan’s poor record in overseas conditions just extended by one more game as the southpaw failed miserably against Essex. At a time when call to drop him from the Test team is doing the rounds, Dhawan did little to shut up his critics.

Dhawan, who is yet to play a big knock in England, got a pair in the three-day warm-up game. In the second innings, he couldn’t account for the seam movement and was cleaned by Matthew Quinn. The latest dismissal is bound to raise questions about his ability to handle the moving ball. Moreover, the Indian camp would be worried about Dhawan’s form and need to take a bold call ahead of the first Test.

Even in the first innings, he had played a poor shot to be dismissed for a golden duck. The left-handed batsman had ended up edging an away going delivery to the wicketkeeper.

The latest failure comes on the back of his poor performance in South Africa.  He had scored 16 and 16 in the first Test before being dropped for the series.

Meanwhile, the fans slammed Dhawan for the pair and few even demanded the inclusion of Rohit Sharma.

Coming to the game, it ended in a draw. India were 89 for 2 in the second innings, before a spell of rain resulted in the umpires calling off the final day’s play.

Essex resumed the proceedings on day three on 237 for 5. James Foster and Paul Walter (75), stitched a useful stand of 91. Umesh Yadav ended the stand by castling Foster.

Six runs later, Umesh struck again to remove Matt Coles. However, Walter and Aron Nijjar quashed India’s hopes of wrapping up Essex innings quickly. The two took the score past the 300-run mark. They stitched together a partnership of 53 runs to frustrate the visitors.

Ishant ended the stand when he sent back Walter for a well-made 75.  Nijjar and Feroze Khushi then frustrated India further before the home side decided to declare.

In reply, India started poorly, losing Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara cheaply. KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane then added 49 runs before rain came.
