Five Cricketers With Hat-Trick On International Cricket Debut

Although international cricket in recent times has been dominated by batsmen, there has been a phase wherein the bowlers dominated the sport. In this article, we will have a look at five cricketers who clinched a hat-trick on their debut in international cricket.

In recent times, it looks as if the bowlers have lost the spark that their predecessors used to carry along with themselves. If we look at the 80s and 90s, pacers like Malcolm Marshal, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Glen McGrath had ruled the world of cricket with their pace and skill.

But, in modern cricket, there are hardly any pacers left who have had the reputation of being a deadly and fearsome bowler globally.

One probable reason behind this might also be the rules and regulations favouring the batsmen in the modern-day scenario. Fans too, usually remember the records made by the batsmen. But there is one record that every bowler wants to achieve.

This record is clinching a debut hat-trick in international cricket. Very few bowlers in world cricket have been able to achieve this feat.

Let’s take a look at five cricketers who were able to bag a hat-trick on their international debut.

Five Cricketers Who Clinched Debut Hat-Trick in International Debut:

Damien Fleming:

Australia’s legendary fast bowler Damien Fleming created history by clinching a hat-trick on his Test debut in 1994. Fleming clinched this hat-trick against Pakistan on away soil. He troubled the Pakistan batsmen to a great extent with his pace and swing.

His first wicket in the hat-trick was of Aamir Sohail. He then sent back Inzamam-Ul-Haq back to the pavilion. Fleming picked his hat-trick by getting rid of Salim Malik.

Taijul Islam:

Bangladesh’s young fast bowler Taijul Islam is the first bowler in international cricket to clinch a hat-trick on his ODI debut. He did the unthinkable in the year 2014 against Zimbabwe.

On the last bowl of the 27th over, Taijul clinched Solomon Mire. Two balls into the start of the 29th, he had four wickets and had completed his hat-trick, with the wickets of Tinashe Panyangara, John Nyumbu and Tendai Chatara.

Taijul became the fourth Bangladesh bowler to take a hat-trick, after Shahadat Hossain, Abdur Razzak and Rubel Hossain.

Shehan Madhushanka:

Sri Lanka’s Shehan Madhushanka became only the second Sri Lankan bowler and world’s fourth bowler to grab a hat-trick on his ODI debut. Madhushanka achieved this incredible feat in 2018 in a game against Bangladesh.

Madhushanka got rid off Mahmudullah Riyad and Masrafe Murtaza on the last two deliveries of the 39th over. He then returned to bowl the 41st over and clinched Rubel Hossain’s wicket to complete his hat-trick. He clinched three wickets in the game bowling only 6.1 overs and giving away 26 runs.

Wanindu Hasaranga:

Wanindu Hasaranga is Sri Lanka’s first and the world’s third bowler to take a hat-trick in ODI debut. Hasaranga achieved this feat in a game against Zimbabwe in the year 2017.

He clinched a hat-trick in his third over of the game sending back Malcolm Waller (38), Donald Tiripano (0) and Tendai Chatara (0) to the pavilion and ending Zimbabwe’s innings.

Zimbabwe were demolished on 155 runs in the game and Sri Lanka won the match with seven wickets in hand.

Kagiso Rabada:

South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada is a class-apart bowler. He is certainly in the top five bowlers in world cricket at the moment.

Rabada grabbed all the headlines by clinching a hat-trick in his debut. He made his ODI debut against Bangladesh on July 10, 2015.

Rabada clinched a hat-trick on the last three bowls of the fourth over of the game. His hat-trick included the wickets of Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das, and Mahmudullah.

Rabada clinched six wickets in the game in his eight overs giving away just 16 runs.

These were the five cricketers who have achieved an incredible feat in their debut games. Many bowlers do not clinch a hat-trick throughout their entire careers. This just goes on to show how special a talent these five cricketers possess.
