India captain Virat Kohli is all set to miss out on his maiden County cricket experience representing Surrey, in order to prepare for the upcoming England and Ireland tour.
According to reports, Kohli sustained a herniated disc from which he could not recover due to the heavy load of international cricket.
As a result, it is possible that the Indian captain might miss out on the initial stages of the England and Ireland tour, which includes the 3-match ODI and T20I series against England.
Here we look at the five possible replacement for Virat Kohli for the upcoming assignment.
Rishabh Pant
After finishing his 2018 IPL season with the Orange Cap, Rishabh Pant doesn’t find himself boarding the flight to the United Kingdoms.
With 684 runs to his name, Pant ended up with his breakthrough season in the IPL and is the favourite to replace Virat Kohli in the limited-overs leg of the England-Ireland tour.
Suryakumar Yadav
The other domestic heavyweight who can replace Virat during India’s upcoming foreign assignment is Mumbai’s, Suryakumar Yadav.
Scoring 512 runs opening the batting for the Mumbai Indians, SK Yadav displayed that he has the game to succeed at the top order. Also, with heaps of domestic runs behind him, Yadav is raring to go at the highest level.
Karun Nair
Even though Karun Nair did not have the ideal IPL this season, the Karnataka stalwart has looked in sensational touch for the Kings XI Punjab.
After an uneventful start to the campaign, Nair finished it off in style with a priceless half-century in a losing cause.
Also, the triple-centurion has been recalled to the Test side in place of Rohit Sharma, after shedding his poor run of form in the domestic season
Mayank Agarwal
Karnataka’s run machine, Mayank Agarwal, found himself in the waiting list of Chairman of Selectors, MSK Prasad, after breaking several records in the recent domestic season.
In spite of his dismal IPL season, selectors might have a look at the elegant stroke-maker, in place of Virat Kohli.
Shreyas Iyer/Ambati Rayudu/ Suresh Raina
Shreyas Iyer is part of the ODI squad but not in the T20I squad for the England and Ireland tour. Whereas, Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina are named in the T20I squad but do not feature in the ODI squad for the 3-match series.
It is possible that either Ambati Rayudu or Suresh Raina would be asked to stay back to feature in the ODI series in the absence of Kohli.
Or BCCI can send Shreyas Iyer early to feature in the T20I squad, ahead of the ODI series. Iyer replaced Kohli in the Sri Lankan series last year, where he impressed one and all with his strokeplay.
Iyer also had a decent IPL outing this season where he amassed as many as 411 runs to his name.
