India started ICC U-19 World Cup with a 100-run victory over Australia at Mount Maunganui. Jack Edwards’s all-round show went in vain as India’s top-three batsmen notched up the fifties to set the team up for a 300-plus total before their bowlers wrapped up Australia for just 228.
India posted a mammoth 180-run partnership for the first wicket before Indian skipper Prithvi Shaw departed six short of his hundred. Manjot Kalra got out on 84 as India crossed the 200-run mark. Shubman Gill then hit a 54-ball 63 to take India past the 250-run mark. Useful contributions from the tailenders further propelled the total to 328.
Two Indian quicks Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi picked three wickets each to wrap up Australia’s innings in the 43rd over itself. Nagarkoti and Mavi bowled over 145kmhr on a regular basis as they troubled the Aussie batsmen. Both the pacer earned praises from one and all and was termed as the prospect for team India.
Former India captain, Sourav Ganguly who is currently in New Zealand with his commentary commitments praised highly about the fast bowlers. He went a step further and asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Indian skipper Virat Kohli and VVS Laxman to keep an eye on this two quicks.

“@imVkohli @VVSLaxman281 @BCCI keep an eye on two under 19quicks ..mavi and nagarkotti ..bowling at 145 in newzealand ..brilliant .,” Sourav wrote on Twitter.
Nagarkoti has already impressed in the first class cricket picking up a hattrick for Rajasthan. He also shined during India’s recent tour to England where he took ten wickets in a match. On the other hand, Shivam was also very impressive in England hurrying the batsman with his extra pace.
India will next play against Papua New Guinea on January 16 at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui.
