Former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan, 72, has tested positive for Covid-19. He is the first high-profile name from Indian cricket fraternity to be tested positive for the deadly disease.

The former opening batsman represented India in 40 Tests. He forged a successful opening partnership with the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in the 1970. The Chauhan-Gavaskar pair is one of the most successful Indian opening pairs in history. He scored 3022 runs with Gavaskar in their 59 opening stands, ten of which were over 100. He finished his Test career with 2,084 runs. The former cricketer also represented India in seven ODIs.

Chetan Chauhan was the first player in Test history to score more than 2000 runs without a hundred. He enjoyed a stunning career in domestic cricket. The former Delhi and Maharashtra batsman piled up more than 11,000 runs in first-class cricket in addition to picking up 51 wickets with his off-spin.

After his cricket career came to an end, he entered politics. Chetan Chauhan was elected as a Lok Sabha MP in the 1990s. He is now a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government.

He was tested for the virus on Friday. According to reports, he has been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi PGI hospital in Lucknow. Former India cricketers Aakash Chopra and RP Singh took to Twitter to confirm the news and wished Chetan Chauhan a speedy recovery.

“Chetan Chauhan ji is also tested positive for #COVIDー19. Sending best wishes in his direction too…get well soon, sir. Tough night this one…Big B and Chetan Ji,” wrote Chopra.

RP Singh, on the other hand, wrote: “Just heard about
@ChetanChauhanCr ji Chetan has tested positive for #coronavirus . Preying for his speedy recovery. “

Meanwhile, a number of cricketers have tested positive for coronavirus in recent times. Bangladesh cricketers Mashrafe Mortaza, Nazmul Islam, Nafees Iqbal and Pakistan’s Taufeeq Umar and Shahid Afridi were also tested positive.
