Ian Taylor, the man who pioneered the Decision Review System (DRS), has slammed Tim Paine after the Australia captain criticised the system. Unimpressed with the DRS, Tim Paine described it as ‘a bit off’ after stumps on day two of the ongoing Boxing Day Test against New Zealand after two decisions went against the hosts.

Tim Paine was critical of the DRS after he missed out on his maiden Test century when he was out lbw after being initially given not out. New Zealand reviewed the decision and got the decision in their favour with ball tracking suggesting it had struck him just in line with the stumps.

The Australia skipper had then further reasons to be frustrated when Ross Taylor had his own lbw dismissal overturned on day two, with ball-tracking predicting the James Pattinson delivery was going over the stumps. After the day’s play, Tim Paine expressed his concerns over the system’s accuracy.

“I’ve got a few doubts, no doubt about that,” Paine told ABC Radio. “I won’t go into it too much because I will get in trouble.

“I’m just seeing time and time again, what I see to the naked eye or watching it on television in real time, and then when it comes up it is sometimes a little bit off the mark,” he added.

Prior to that, he had cheekily sledged Taylor on the field, saying that the New Zealand veteran knows the guy in the DRS truck, thus questioning the legitimacy of the system in a sarcastic manner.

Tim Paine under fire:

A day after Tim Paine’s comments on DRS, the founder of the system lashed out at him. New Zealander Ian Taylor, whose company Animation Research Ltd operates the Virtual Eye technology used to operate DRS at the MCG, invited Paine to come take a closer look at how decisions are made.

“I won’t go into it too far because I’ll get in trouble but I’m just seeing time and time again, what I see to the naked eye, or watching it on television in real time, and then what it comes up as, is sometimes a little bit off the mark,” he told ABC Grandstand.

“After he leaves he might still think he got a raw deal and that’s helpful to us too because we get his input as well, but refusing or not bothering to come and have a look at how the decision was made that’s what’s really frustrating,” Taylor said.

“We’ve got to respect that these guys are really skilful out there and have been playing for ages, so he obviously believes he could see where it was going and this is a really good opportunity – this is what he saw, this is what we captured for real; does he see any discrepancies there now?

“Does he still think we got it wrong? He may, but what’s really frustrating is he doesn’t have any idea how much tech is behind the decision we made and how much care is taken to make sure it’s right. This isn’t instinct,” he added.
