The Indian women cricket team is without a head coach at the moment, and a few stalwart names have come up for the vacant spot. Amongst the 28 candidates listed to appear for the interview, Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs and the ex-coach Ramesh Powar are the front liners. Meanwhile, the ad-hoc panel, consisting of Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy will conduct the proceedings on Thursday (December 20th).

Moreover, the other applicants for the vacant post are WV Raman, Venkatesh Prasad, Manoj Prabhakar, Trent Johnston, Mark Coles, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Brad Hogg. Though the foreigners are expected to get connected through Skype, the former coach Ramesh Powar will be present in person.

“The ad-hoc panel comprises former players of high repute. I have no doubt that the committee will pick the best one,” a BCCI member informed PTI.

Meanwhile, the fallout between Ramesh Powar and Mithali Raj was the reason the Indian women’s cricket team doesn’t have a coach. However, it began during the Women’s World T20 2018 semifinal clash in the Caribbean. The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur decided to drop Mithali Raj against England for the semis. As she remained fit and had hit a fifty in the game against Pakistan, dropping her didn’t make much sense to anyone.

Later, after a few reports emerged inviting a tiff between captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj; putting the matter to everyone’s notice. Furthermore, Mithali accused Powar of misbehaviour and biasedness in the team selection, leading to matter getting worse. With the BCCI entering the scenario, Powar’s contract got controversially over.

However, the Supreme Court-led Committee of Administrators (CoA) members, Diana Edulji and chairman Vinod Rai got divided over the selection process. While Vinod Rai instructed the BCCI to invite fresh applicants for the job, Edulji wanted Powar to continue.

Now, as the interview date has been scheduled, the BCCI must elect the new head coach for the Indian women’s cricket team; and ensure, no such fallouts take place in times to come.
