MS Dhoni did not have the best of the times both as captain and batsman of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020. Chennai Super Kings went out of the race for playoffs for the first time in the history of IPL as the franchise suffered eight losses out of 12 fixtures being in the eighth spot in the points table. Despite a forgettable season, Gautam Gambhir feels that the management will not sack MS Dhoni as the skipper.

MS Dhoni has copped plenty of criticism for his inconsistency in selections and choosing non-performing players as well. One of the root causes of their underperformances was the lack of acceleration in the powerplay overs. Apart from that, the Super Kings’ fielders also dropped some catches in the field, especially against the Delhi Capitals, contributing to their loss.

When asked about Chennai Super Kings’ leadership decision, Gautam Gambhir stated that it is up to the franchise. Gambhir underlined the mutual respect between the franchise and MS Dhoni, who has led the team to unparalleled heights. He feels that it is how every franchise owner should deal with a skipper, who has done plenty for the side.

You’re putting me in a fix. Now that’s a tough question. It up to the franchise. What he has done for the franchise and how the franchise actually deals with MS and treats MS is a fabulous relationship. And that is how every franchise should deal with their captain, who has delivered for them,” Gambhir told ESPN Cricinfo.

The former Indian opener pointed out that the keeper-batsman won them three IPL trophies, a couple of Champions League competitions, making them the most successful IPL side after Mumbai Indians. He cited the mutual respect behind MS Dhoni’s loyalty, sweat, heart and soul to the franchise. Gambhir added that the 39-year old might have endured many sleepless nights as the captain of CSK.

MS has won them three [IPL] trophies, couple of Champions Leagues, he has made them one of the top successful sides in the IPL after Mumbai Indians. So CSK saying they are going to continue with MS – it is just the relationship, it is just the mutual respect. That’s why MS has been so loyal. That’s why MS has given everything: heart and soul, his sweat, sleepless nights – I’m sure he must have had sleepless nights while he has continued captaining CSK,” he added.
