Former Delhi skipper, Gautam Gambhir has opted himself out of any decision-making process for the appointment of the support staff for the senior team of Delhi, as per the reports in Press Trust of India (PTI).
Meanwhile, Gambhir recently became a part of the Cricket Committee after the appointment of new President Rajat Sharma. However, a senior Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official while talking to PTI noted that he has decided to stay away from any controversy.
Furthermore, the official noted Gambhir will look after the grassroots level programme in the national capital.
“Gautam Gambhir will not be a part of any Ranji Trophy recruitment meetings as it might lead to Conflict of Interest. However, he is likely to play an active part in drawing blueprint for Delhi cricket. He will very much be a part of the recruitment process of U-19, U-16. He wants to have a close look at how DDCA is looking after its grassroots programme,” he said.
Moreover, Gambhir is still an active player for the Delhi side and played a pivotal role in their success last year. He scored 683 runs in 12 innings, including three centuries.
The southpaw played for the state as a pure batsman after deciding not to lead the team in premiere first-class competition Ranji Trophy. But Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant shared captaincy duties in the first-class format. Then, Ishant and Pradeep Sangwan took the charge in the limited-overs format.
However, Delhi had quite a fruitful season, making it to the second round of each tournament played.
Ishant Sharma likely to lead his domestic team:
The state is likely to announce the preliminary squad soon with Vijay Hazare trophy starting in September. The lanky pacer Ishant will likely take up the captaincy role as he will be available for the majority of the season.
However, Gautam Gambhir will play solely as a batsman for Delhi. Eventually, he deciding not to be a part of support staff.
Delhi will be in search of a backup gloveman for Rishabh Pant, the swashbuckling wicket-keeper-batsman. He is likely to make appearances for India in the upcoming fixtures during the season. But Pant will not be available for the whole season.
