The calls for Suryakumar Yadav to be included in the Indian white-ball teams’ are getting louder with every passing day. The Mumbai Indians batsman has been brilliant in the Indian Premier League in the past three seasons, having accumulated 400-plus runs on each occasion.
Not only IPL, but Suryakumar Yadav has also had a sensational run across all formats in domestic cricket in the past 2-3 years and so it was hugely surprising when the charismatic batsman did not earn a call-up to India’s T20 squad for the tour of Australia.
Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener, feels that given the fact that Suryakumar Yadav is a finished product and currently at the peak of his powers, it is the right time to blood-in the 3o-year-old in the national side.
Gambhir further asserted that people should not label Yadav as just a T20 player as the southpaw feels that the Mumbai Indians batsman has the ability to shine in other formats as well.
”Surya is a guy, he’s seen First-Class cricket, he has dominated First-Class Cricket. He has been very consistent in IPL as well. He’s 30, he’s got another 6-7 years where he can actually deal with the ups and downs of international cricket. He can handle the pressure as well This is the right time. The way he is batting, he is in complete control of himself. And, not only in T20 cricket. Don’t label him just as a T20 cricketer. He could be a seamless 50-over cricketer as well” Gautam Gambhir told ESPNCricinfo.
“KKR’s loss is actually Mumbai’s gain”- Gautam Gambhir on KKR letting go of Suryakumar Yadav
Gautam Gambhir also lamented on the fact that his former franchise Kolkata Knight Riders choose to let go of Suryakumar Yadav after having groomed him four years, adding that KKR’s loss is actually MI’s gain.
”I feel sorry for KKR (Suryakumar Yadav played for KKR in the earlier part of his IPL career). You groom a guy for 4 years and then you let him go, when he could have actually been the main guy, and after he went to Mumbai from thereon look at the kind of player he has become” Gambhir added.
“KKR’s loss is actually Mumbai’s gain. First from Surya’s point-of-view, it is a huge loss for KKR. Yes, he is a finished product because he is at the right age. Sometimes we push players too early because of their talent,” he signed off.
