Former Indian cricketer and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir on Thursday pledged to donate his 2 year’s salary to the Primer Minister’s Citizen Assistance Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) fund, to support India’s cause against the Coronavirus Pandemic.

So far, 50 people have lost their lives due to the contagious illness, with close to 1800 positive cases registered in the subcontinent. Of these, nearly 131 people were confirmed positive in the last 12 hours, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With Coronavirus spreading at such an alarming rate, the 38-year-old has stepped forward to help the nation.

Gautam Gambhir pledges to donate two year’s salary to PM Cares Fund, encourages others as well:

Amid the outbreak, Gambhir has already sanctioned a relief package of one crore, out of his MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) Funds.

“People ask what can their country do for them. The real question is what can you do for your country? I am donating my two year’s salary to PM-CARES Fund. You should come forward too!” Gambhir said in a tweet asking other people to make contributions too.

Earlier the former Indian opener had revealed that his foundation, ‘Gautam Gambhir Foundation’ was distributing food packets to daily wage workers in his constituency in New Delhi. As India is currently under a 21-day lockdown, poor people cannot make arrangements for their food.

He also revealed that so far more 2,000 food packets were distributed among people in East Delhi, where there is a large number of daily wage workers’ residence.

On 2nd April 2011, exactly nine years ago, India lifted the ICC ODI World Cup after a prolonged gap of 28 years. ESPN CricInfo tweeted about the same with a picture of MS Dhoni’s match-winning six, after which Gambhir pointed out that it was a team effort.

Soon netizens mocked the BJP MP by saying that he was being ‘jealous’ and that he wanted ‘credit’. Notably, Gambhir had scored 97 runs in the final versus Sri Lanka, playing a big hand in India’s chase.
