Australia cricketers Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson finally returned to action after taking a break from the game in order to deal with mental health problems. Both the cricketers played for their respective clubs on Saturday to restart the game. Though they took an indefinite break, it took them only two weeks to be back in the action.
Glenn Maxwell took the break when he was representing the nation against Sri Lanka. Surprisingly, he took the call after scoring a brilliant knock in the first match of the series against Sri Lanka. However, Cricket Australia respected his decision and gave him a green signal to take the break from the game.
He was followed by Nic Maddinson, who also asked for a break alongside Will Puckovsci, who is facing mental health issues for a long time now. Playing his first game after the break, Glenn Maxwell scored 5 runs and picked up 2 wickets for Fitzroy Doncaster club. On the other hand, Nic Maddinson scored 58 runs for St Kilda.
We are working with states about the well-being of players – Kevin Roberts
Following the breaks from the star players, Cricket Australia brought a new plan to counter the issue. Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts announced on Friday that eight hours will be set aside every week for domestic players to either work on post-cricket careers or put back into the community.
“Having eight hours every week for every domestic player, male or female, to work on their professional development or contribute to the community. We know from research that doing either of those things enhances wellbeing,” Kevin Roberts said.
“We’ll be working with states and territories to make sure when we have payers merge into national teams, they’re more well-rounded and they’re contributing to their communities and getting involved in other aspects of life.”
Well, it was a piece of great news for Australia, as there are quite a few important series lined up. With the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup 2020 set to be played in Australia, the presence of Glenn Maxwell will be very important for the team.
