In 2019, the number 4 position was the massive headache for the Indian National Cricket Team. They have tried various players at that slot but failed to stick with one batsman. The likes of Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar, Rahane and a few more were tried, but the team management finally found the balance in the name of Shreyas Iyer. Speaking of the same, Rohit Sharma believes Iyer will stay in the team for a while.

The board didn’t consider Shreyas Iyer for the ICC World Cup 2019, but the flamboyant batsman proved his mettle in the series against the West Indies, just after the ICC event. He later followed it up with fine performances in India, which cemented his position in the Indian team.

I am confident of our youngsters – Rohit Sharma

Speaking of his excellent performances, Rohit Sharma stated that Shreyas Iyer proved his strength for the team and owned the number 4 slot. He believes Iyer will continue in the role for a while and asked the other youngsters to own the positions as quickly as possible. Rohit Sharma further asks the critics to wait for the youngsters to play enough matches at the International stage.

“Shreyas knows that he will now bat at No.4 for years to come. He feels secure and can now execute his plans freely. The other guys will first need to make the respective spots their own. The problem is that between KL (Rahul), Rishabh, Shreyas and Shivam, they haven’t played many matches together as a team,” Rohit Sharma said.

”But that will happen now, and once that happens, they will get some confidence. Things are changing now. Shreyas (Iyer) is No.4 now, and he is doing pretty well. Rishabh (Pant) did well in the West Indies ODIs. Shivam (Dube) has started doing well. So, I am confident, our youngsters will step up,” Rohit Sharma told PTI.
