Owing to the high-profile coaching role, former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has applied for India women’s team coaching job. Gibbs is one of the most prolific batsmen of his time. The Proteas star had played 248 One-day Internationals (ODIs), 90 Tests and 23 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for his national team.

Gibbs is on the mark:

Moreover, the veteran cricketer landed into the coaching arena with the Kuwait national team in 2017. Also, Gibbs was part of the recently concluded T10 League which was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Recently, he served as the head coach of Balkh Legends in the maiden edition of the Afghanistan Premier League (APL).

“Yes, Gibbs is very much interested in the role of women’s coach. It is a very prestigious job, to be associated with the Indian national team. He has applied for the position and hopes to be called for the interview soon,” a source close to Gibbs confirmed to CricketNext.

Meanwhile, there were also speculations that former Team India pacer Venkatesh Prasad may have applied for the same post. However, according to the CricNext, Prasad has not applied for the position yet.

Also, since inviting applications for the women’s team head coach, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indicated that they are looking for high-profile candidates.

Besides, there were also talks that Tom Moody and Dav Whatmore could also be considered for the role. However, there is no confirmation yet that who will be appointed for the role.

“The women’s team has been performing quite well recently. They have managed to improve a lot over the last year. We want a high-profile coach for the women’s team as well, who can push them and guide them to greater success. That is why we are sparing no expense on the hiring of a new coach,” a CoA source maintained.

Furthermore, another former South African Ray Jennings, is also considering to apply for the chief coach role.

“I haven’t made up my mind yet. India is like my second home,” Jennings told CricketNext.

Jennings throws support behind Gibbs:

“I have to do some homework, look at where all they are touring, what are the challenges and future assignments of the team. But if Herschelle has applied, he’ll do a good job if picked,” he added.

Significantly, BCCI is also expected to invite a member of the Women’s team in this procedure. Well, the fresh move could include the likes of Shantha Rangaswamy or Shubhangi Kulkarni.
