Players succumbing to on-field injuries is nothing new in cricket. Over the years, one has witnessed several unfortunate incidents of players passing away after being injured on the field. One of the most high-profile incidents took place in this decade only when former Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes passed away in 2014 after a bouncer from Sean Abbott had hit him on the back of his death.

Since then, the authorities and players have tried to take all precautionary measures to avoid any tragic incident. But every now and then, one comes across news of players receiving life threatening injuries. In some tragic cases, some players also succumb to those on-field injuries. And such a similar incident took place in Hyderabad where a cricketer passed away on Sunday while playing.

The deceased, who was playing for Marredpally Sporting club, collapsed and died after scoring a half-century against his team’s bitter rivals Marredpally Blues in an A-3 Division one-day league match at the Marredpally Playground.

Virendra Naik was 41 and left behind his homemaker wife, eight-year-old son and a daughter aged five. The family resides in Gudimalkapur in Mehdipatnam, according to Deccan Chronicle. The report further claimed that Viren’s last rites will be performed at his native place Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra after the West Marredpally police hand over the body after postmortem at the Gandhi Hospital.

The reason behind the death:

As of now, cardiac arrest is thought to be the cause of death. The main reason will become clear only after the postmortem. Virendra’s brother Avinash stated to the police that “he was under medication for chest diseases”. Avinash also ruled out any possibility of foul play in his brother’s tragic demise.

Virendra was going strong on the field after Sporting batted first. He was in his elements minutes before breathing his last on Sunday. He made 66 before being adjudged caught behind the wicket, a decision he thought was flawed, according to his captain Tript Singh. Later, he collapsed in the pavilion, hitting his head against a wall while going down.

Virendra’s teammates were moving him into the car before a doctor, who was passing by, stopped and checked it. The doctor said that the cricketer’s pulse was very low and asked the players to rush him to a hospital. Viren was declared ‘brought dead’ at the Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad.

Tript offered to concede the match but rival captain Yesudas Joseph and the umpire said they would deem the game as abandoned.

“Viren was very energetic and a livewire on the field who played like a 20-year-old,” said the captain.

“Highly enthusiastic and passionate about the game, he always carried himself with a nice smile. He played with fire but in good spirit and never crossed the line of decency. He would not wait for the umpire’s decision if he was out… he would walk. I’m still in shock. He will be dearly missed,” he added.
