Royal Challengers Bangalore, on Monday, thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders by 82 runs to register their fifth win of the season. With the win, RCB also leapfrogged KKR to take the third spot in the points table.

Chasing a mammoth total of 195, KKR never looked like crossing the finishing line as they finished on 112 for 9. Tom Banton, making his IPL debut and Shubman Gill failed to provide a quick start before KKR suffered a collapse that saw them getting reduced to 64 for 5 from 51 for 1.

The two-time champions kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually ended their innings on 112 for 9. Gill top-scored for the side with 34. For RCB, Chris Morris and Washington Sundar picked two wickets each.

Earlier in the game, RCB posted a daunting total of 194 for 2 in the allotted 20 overs thanks to a whirlwind knock from AB de Villiers. Openers Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch gave the team another good start by adding 67 runs for the first wicket before the former was dismissed for 32. Finch was dismissed for 47 before Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers joined hands.

The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 100 runs to power their side to the huge total. De Villiers was the destructor-in-chief while Kohli, who was struggling to play his shots, looked content to play the role of the second fiddle. De Villiers blasted 73 off just 33 balls while Kohli remained unbeaten on 33 off 28 balls.

Dinesh Karthik’s reaction:

Speaking at the end of the match, Dinesh Karthik praised de Villiers, saying that the South African was the difference between the two sides. He also admitted that the KKR team-management needs to reassess its plans after another poor batting display. The KKR captain also insisted that he is not reading too much into the defeat.

“He (de Villiers) is a world-class player and hard to stop him on a ground like this and at the end of the day his innings was the difference between both sides. We need to sit down and make sure there are new things we need to do better,” said Dinesh Karthik.

“Batting is one area we didn’t do well today and that’s something we gonna try and improve. We have three days break and we need to start fresh after that. It’s been an interesting IPL so far as a lot of teams are comfortable batting first. I think every captain has a day like this where everything doesn’t go according to plan and it’s one of those days for me, I don’t want to read too much into it,” he added.
