It has been fifteen years since Dinesh Karthik made his international debut as one of the most highly-rated teenagers in the country. With India struggling to find a regular wicketkeeper-batsman at that time, Karthik had a golden opportunity of becoming an incumbent member of the playing eleven. But fast-forward to 2019 and Karthik is still struggling to become a regular member of the team.

The last couple of years have been promising but has still not cemented his place in the team. In fact, he would have also failed to make it to the World Cup squad but the selectors picked him over Rishabh Pant due to his experience. But whatever the scenario has been in the past 15 years, Karthik has always remained in discussion and the Tamil Nadu has aptly pointed it out.  Karthik said that he has managed to remain relevant throughout irrespective of the comments from others.

“I would not still be playing if it was not for the blessings of my friends and family. Good or bad, if people still talk about you it means that you have managed to stay relevant,” Karthik was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

“It is extremely satisfying that I have managed to stay relevant all these years and still trying hard to be part of the team,” Karthik added.

Karthik, who was being groomed as a finisher by India in the last one year or so, was a surprise omission from the team for the series against Australia. It was India’s last series before World Cup and many thought that the selectors would pick Pant over Karthik. Karthik has now said that like many he too was taken aback by the decision.

“I was a bit shocked (after not being picked for Australia series) but I had faith that you know if it is meant to be,” he said.

Karthik, meanwhile, will be looking to leave his mark in the World Cup if an opportunity arrives. The World Cup will start on May 30 while India will start their campaign on June 5.
