After having asserted with disdain that ‘certain parties’ in Sri Lanka sold the 2011 World Cup final to India, former Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has said that his claims are mere suspicion, something that he wants to be probed.

Following the claims by Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who was serving as the Sports Minister at the time, the Sri Lankan government has ordered a probe into the matter.

A special Police investigation unit recorded Altuthgamage’s statement on Wednesday where he said that he was only suspicious of fixing.

“I want my suspicion investigated. I gave to the Police, a copy of the complaint I lodged with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 30 October 2011 regarding the said allegation as then Sports Minister,” Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.

‘Certain parties sold the 2011 World Cup’- Mahindananda Aluthgamage has alleged; a claim that has been ridiculed by former Sri Lankan cricketers

Mahindananda Aluthgamage recently turned heads when he claimed that the political parties in Sri Lanka sold the 2011 World Cup final to India, a claim which was ridiculed by two prominent members of that Sri Lankan team – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

“Today I am telling you that we sold the 2011 world cup, I said this when I was the sports minister,” Aluthgamage, who was serving as Sports Minister at the time, had said.

Kumar Sangakkara had asked the former minister to produce the evidence before the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit while Mahela Jayawardene went on to ridicule the allegations, asking whether elections were round the corner.

“He needs to take his ‘evidence’ to the ICC and the Anti-corruption and Security Unit so the claims can be investigated thoroughly,” Sangakkara tweeted.

“Is the elections around the corner…like the circus has started…names and evidence?” Mahela Jayawardene asked in a tweet.

Aluthgamage reckoned that while no players were involved “but certain parties were.”

Earlier, Aravinda de Silva, who was the then national selector, had also lambasted Althugamage by saying that he was ‘a man with no credibility’. De Silva had also urged the BCCI to conduct a probe in order to prove that the allegations are indeed ‘baseless’.
