India’s U-19 batsman Shubman Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Singh is delighted at the performance of his son in the ongoing ICC U-19 World Cup. Shubman’s father admits Gill has always been a dedicated cricketer.

Shubman has always been dedicated to the game of cricket. I am very happy and proud of my son’s performance in the ongoing World Cup,” Lakhwinder told PTI earlier today.

Shubman struck an unbeaten 102 earlier on Tuesday, as India defeated Pakistan by 203 runs to reach the finals of the tournament. Shubman’s father is elated to see his son scoring a hundred.

We are elated with his century in today’s match against Pakistan and defeating the Pakistani team,” Lakhwinder added.

Talking about his childhood days, Lakhwinder revealed Shubman has been passionate about the game since the age of three.

Shubman never liked any other toy. He always loved playing with the bat and ball. He used to play with a cricket bat and ball even during going to bed,” Lakhwinder, whose family belongs to a village in Fazilka in Punjab said.

Shubman’s father further talked about the sacrifice they underwent to focus more on Shubman.

We fully supported him for achieving his dream to become a cricketer. We dedicated 15 years to him to enable him to become a world-class cricketer. We even left our work and skipped several family functions including marriage ceremonies of our relatives so we could dedicate as much time as we could on him,” Lakhwinder concluded.

Shubman’s ton was well supported by Bengal’s young pacer Ishan Porel who returned with a figure of 4/17 in six overs. India will now face Australia in the finals of the tournament on February 3. Australia reached the final beating Afghanistan by six wickets.

Gill is currently India’s highest run-scorer in the tournament with 341 runs. Gill has already received praises for his batting skills from the cricketing fraternity.

Shubman was recently bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for Rs 1.8 crore.
