Former Indian National Cricket team skipper Sunil Gavaskar has picked England as his favourite team to lift the title in the upcoming ICC World Cup in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the top-ranked ODI side will begin the campaign on the first day of the tournament against South Africa on May 30.

Meanwhile, the top teams are currently in their last leg of preparation with the World Cup in three months. While the other teams are still pondering over 1-2 spots, England have looked quite dominant in this format. Since their humiliating performance in the 2015 World Cup, the English side have witnessed significant transition. The team led by Eoin Morgan have played fearless cricket setting their own style of playing. Also, the batting looks invincible, well backed by some world-class bowlers.

England favourites to lift the trophy

The 12th edition of the league will witness ten teams battling it out for the prestigious title. This is the fifth time England have hosted the World Cup – earlier they have hosted World Cups in 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999. In the last two World Cup finals, the host nation has emerged victorious. India won their second title when they organised the tournament in 2011. Four years later in 2015, Australia lifted the coveted trophy – with the final played in Melbourne. And now, Sunil Gavaskar feels England can replicate the record of two host countries. England will host the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final at The Lord’s (London) on 14th July.

“If you go by the history of last two or three World Cups, in 2011 the host nation India won, in 2015 host nation Australia won. In 2019, there is a very good chance that England will win the World Cup,” Gavaskar said at the British High Commissioner’s residence.

Meanwhile, England are yet to win the World Cup and will be desperate to change the humiliating statistics. Although they managed to end the ODI series against Windies in a draw, they are the top team in this format and most of the pundits will put their money on the hosts. England will play Indian National Cricket team on 30th June in Edgbaston in the upcoming ICC World Cup.
