South Africa finally managed to produce a complete effort as they spoiled Sri Lanka’s party of progressing to the top-four beating them convincingly at the Riverside Stadium in Chester-le-Street. Hasim Amla and skipper Faf du Plessis stood tall to chase down the target of 204 runs set by Sri Lanka.

South Africa spoils Sri Lanka’s World Cup

Batting first, Sri Lanka never looked in line to post a good total on the board. Kagiso Rabada removed skipper Dimuth Karunaratne in the first ball of the over. Since then, Kusal Perera and Avishaka Fernando added 67 runs for the second wicket which was the only 50+ runs stand for Sri Lanka. Avishka has been the find for Sri Lanka in this World Cup who has looked in prime touch in whatever small knocks he has played. However, he is new in the international circuit and will only mature with time.

Dwaine Pretorius impressed in his World Cup debut returning with three wickets while Chris Morris claimed another three to run down over the Sri Lanka batting. Moreover, this is the first instance in the tournament, South Africa have looked good as a bowling unit. It was Thisara Perera and Isuru Udana’s late contributions which helped them go past the 200-run mark.

It was an easy chase and South Africa looked in complete control of the game. Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla started with a bang but an outstanding yorker from Lasith Maling shortened de Kock’s stay at the crease. Although they lost a wicket, they were never out of the game as skipper Faf du Plessis took control of the game brilliantly. Amla and du Plessis paced the innings brilliantly to stage their second win of the tournament after Afghanistan.

The Proteas cruised through to the winning lines by nine wickets with Amla unbeaten at 96 runs.
