Inaugural Lanka Premier League To Kickstart From August 28

The 1st edition of Lanka Premier League [LPL] T20 tournament will take place between August 28-September 20, following the approval from the Health Ministry, a Sri Lanka Cricket [SLC] official said on Monday [July 27].
The T20 tournament has been in the pipeline since 2018 and was originally scheduled to take place from August 08 but for the ongoing Covid-19 situation in the island nation that forced the SLC to postpone it.
However, SLC’s Ex-CO decided t9 stage the tournament late next month after 10 foreign coaches and more than 70 international players showed their interest in the league.
Lanka Premier League will consist of five teams representing Colombo, Galle, Jaffna, Kandy, Dambulla. Each team will be allowed to pick a maximum of six foreign players from the pool of 70, meaning that only 30 internationals’ will participate in the inaugural LPL.

The LPL will still require prior approval from the Health Ministry but SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said that the board is confident that the tournament will go ahead as planned.
“We are hoping to have a meeting with the Health Ministry officials next week, and since they have already given us the go-ahead to conduct the domestic cricket tournament, we are confident that we will be able to have the Lanka Premier League,” de Silva was quoted as saying by ‘The Daily Mail’
“We will have to seek Health Ministry guidelines,” de Silva said when asked about whether the foreign players and coaches will have to undergo quarantine.
The Sri Lanka Cricket CEO added that it will be up to the event holders ton decide how players will be chosen.
“The event holder will make the decision but it most likely will be through an auction,” de Silva said.
The inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League [LPL] will be played across four International venues in Colombo, Dambulla, Palekelle, and the Sooriyawewa Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.
