One of the best batsmen of his era and a master tactician of the game, Greg Chappell’s appointment as India’s head coach in 2005 was expected to bring a lot of success.

Except, it didn’t!

Chappell’s tenure as Indian head coach was marred with a plethora of controversies, the most sensational of them all was his differences with Sourav Ganguly, post which the then Indian captain was stripped of his role and was also ousted from the team.

Chappell’s controversial run came to an end with India’s group-stage exit from the 2007 World Cup. During his tenure, Chappell bagged Rs 1.24 Crore per annum, which was the highest amount for any Indian coach at the time.

Easily, the most successful coach that India has had in their history- Gary Kirsten.

The former South African was the exact opposite of Greg Chappell. He preferred to stay in the background; had a good relationship with the senior players while at the same time nurtured the current superstars in Virat and Rohit.

Under the leadership duo of MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten, Team India scaled a plethora of heights which includes their rise to the No.1 Test ranking in 2009 and of-course the 2011 World Cup win on home soil.

Talking about Gary’s salary, the former Indian coach took Rs 2.5 Crore/annum which is 101.6 ℅ more than what Chappell used to get.

Duncan Fletcher [2011-2015]- Rs 4.2 Crore/annum

Duncan Fletcher took over the reins of the team at a time when Indian cricket was about to go through a rebuilding phase. His stint started on a horrendous note with India getting whitewashed in both England and Australia.

Post the 2011-12 season, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman announced their retirement from international cricket, and 18 months later, Tendulkar followed suit. Duncan and Dhoni had their task cut-out as far as rebuilding the team was concerned. But the results in the next overseas cycle didn’t help their cause and Fletcher’s role was diluted post-India’s 1-3 drubbing in England, 2014.

That said, India still had quite a few achievements under Fletcher which includes winning the 2013 Champions Trophy, finishing as runners-up and semi-finalists in the 2014 T20 and 2015 50-over World Cup and the 4-0 whitewash against Australia in 2013.

Speaking of Fletcher’s salary, the veteran coach took home Rs 4.2 Crore/annum- 68℅ more than his predecessor Gary Kirsten.

Anil Kumble [2016-2017]- Rs 6.25 Crore/annum

Anil Kumble’s stint as an Indian coach lasted just 12 months but even in that short period of time, Kumble achieved great success. Under his reign as Head Coach, India enjoyed a brilliant home season where they steamrolled almost every visiting side- New Zealand 3-0, England 4-0 & Australia 2-1- besides finishing as the runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy.

Unfortunately, Kumble’s tenure came to an abrupt end after he tendered his resignation, saying that his relationship with Virat Kohli has become ‘untenable’

Kumble’s annual salary as head coach was Rs 6.25 Crore- 48.8℅ more than what Duncan Fletcher got.

Ravi Shastri [2017- present]- Rs 10 Crore/annum

Ravi Shastri is the current coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Shastri had previously served as the director of the team in 2007 and between 2014-16, but it was really in 2017, that he was appointed as the Head Coach, following Anil Kumble’s resignation.

During his first contract (2017-19), Shastri received an annual income of Rs 8 Crore. Shastri’s first stint with controversy as his hyperbole garnered a lot of criticism. Barring the historic win in Australia [2-1 in 2018], India underperformed substantially as they squandered a golden chance to win Test series in England and South Africa and of-course regaining the 2019 World Cup, and Shastri’s role in team selection came under a scanner.

However, despite India not being able to achieve what they should have, considering the amount of talent they have at their disposal, Shastri’s contract was not only renewed but he was also given a 25℅ hike in his salary, taking his annual package to Rs 10 Crore.
