Outing Team India selector Devang Gandhi has taken a dig at the ‘experts’ while explaining the reason behind ignoring Suryakumar Yadav for the upcoming series in Australia. The right-handed batsman was being widely tipped to earn a call-up for the tour thanks to his consistent performances but was sadly ignored.
Living up to the expectations, he delivered in the just-concluded IPL 2020 too, playing a key role in Mumbai Indians’ triumph. Suryakumar Yadav scored 480 runs in 16 games as Mumbai Indians went on to clinch the IPL title for a record fifth time.
Devang Gandhi explains the reason behind the snub:
The selectors have been facing severe criticism for ignoring Suryakumar Yadav for the upcoming series. Not only the fans but several former cricketers also took shots at the selection panel for its. Devang Gandhi, who was a part of the panel, has now tried to explain the reason behind the decision.
The former India batsman started by taking a dig at the ‘experts’ before stating that the reason behind the batsman not getting a call-up was India’s huge bench strength. He further called Suryakumar Yadav a brilliant player and advised him to stay patient.
“I would request the experts that while they are talking about Suryakumar’s exclusion, they should also tell us who should have been kept out. India has a huge bench strength and the selection process is often about exclusion. There can be four equally good players for one slot,” Devang Gandhi told TOI.
Obviously, you have to keep some talented players out. Suryakumar is a brilliant player, but he will have to be patient. He must keep performing. Mayank Agarwal is one batsman who barged into the squad, consistently performing well,” he added.
