The name Manjot Kalra has become a household name ever since the southpaw struck a sensational century against the Aussies in the final of the ICC U-19 World Cup to help the Men in Blue clinch their 4th title, thus going past Australia with three titles to their name.
After the Indian bowling brigade helped the Aussies skittle out for 216, it was left to the batters to complete the job without any fuss. Eventually, India completed a comprehensive victory by eight wickets and with 67 balls to spare, as Kalra remained unbeaten on 102 while Harvick Desai was there to support him.
While he has been compared to Yuvraj Singh for his bat swing, he has been compared to the Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan for his looks and revealed people told him that he resembled the Bollywood icon.
“When I used to dress well people tell me that I look like Shah Rukh Khan,” Kalra was quoted as saying by the ICC in an interview earlier in the week.
The southpaw started off the tournament with a well composed 86 against Australia but failed to make amends in the next three matches for which he got dropped for the quarter-final clash against Bangladesh. However, he returned with a bang against Pakistan in the Semi-final with an impressive 47 a followed it up with a match-winning knock in the final.
Meanwhile, coach Rahul Dravid was pretty happy with the performance and said the team deserved to win the trophy and enjoy the moment.
“I’m really happy that the 15 boys got to wear the World Cup medal. They deserve it. It’s been a lot of sacrifices, the way they played in the World Cup. The way they jelled, the quality of cricket they played – all these give you a lot of satisfaction. We were under pressure in a few games, but there were people who stood up and delivered,” the former India skipper said who finally lived his dream of lifting a World Cup albeit as a coach said.
