The high-flying Indian team will enter the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia with their confidence sky high. Barring the blip in Bangalore where they lost the game by 21 runs while chasing a daunting 335, India made light work of the world champions in the recently-concluded five-match ODI series.

Virat Kohli & Co. looked formidable throughout the series as they clinched it 4-1. The impressive series win, nonetheless, also helped them to move to the top of the ODI rankings. Team India is already at the top in Tests and will now be eyeing to reach the pinnacle in the shortest format of the game. The Kohli-led side currently lies at a lowly fifth in T20Is and the upcoming series will be the first step towards improving it.

So here we are taking a look at the impact the series will make on the rankings:

If India whitewashes Australia:

If the Men in Blue win all the three games of the upcoming series, they will close the gap to just three points with number one T20I side New Zealand. The series win will be a huge step towards India’s hopes of becoming the top-ranked side in all the formats which they might achieve when New Zealand visits India later this month for a three-match T20I series.

On the other hand, a whitewash will see Australia losing 8 points but they will still remain at their current seventh position.

If Australia whitewashes the hosts:

In case, the visitors manage to pull off the unlikely heist, they will jump four places to take the third spot in the rankings while India will drop to seventh from fifth.

If India win 2-1:

A 2-1 win will see India gaining two points but it will not help them topple fourth-ranked England who are 3 points ahead of them at fourth. On the other hand, the loss will see Australia losing a couple of points but it will not affect their standings.

If Australia win 2-1:

If Steve Smith & Co. win the series 2-1, they will gain four points and jump to number 5 while India will fall to the 6th spot.
