A number of Indian players could reportedly ply their trade in the upcoming inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The tournament will be finally played from mid-November, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced earlier this month.

The first season of the competition was scheduled to start on August 28. However, SLC decided to postpone the competition for a couple of months after considering the guidelines provided by the country’s Health Ministry.

The inaugural edition of the tournament will now be held from November 14 to December 6, with matches to be played in Dambulla, Kandy and Hambantota. Five Teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the league.

Indian players in LPL:

The tournament is already being associated with several big names from the game. The likes of Sir Vivian Richards, Brian Lara, Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akthar are the few names to be associated with the LPL. The development was revealed by Anil Mohan, the chief of the Innovative Production Group overseeing the success of the tournament.

“These stalwarts have confirmed to be the mentors for the various teams. We are also approaching Kumar Sangakkara to be associated with one of the franchise teams,” he was quoted as saying by Pakobserver.net.

He further stated that more big names will join the tournament after the IPL which ends on November 10. Mohan also stated that a number of Indian players could also feature in LPL as he revealed that the likes of Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar and the Pathan Brothers (Irfan and Yusuf) are in fray.

“Some more will join after IPL. We are given the list (by the SLC) and former Indian fast bowlers Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar have agreed to play the LPL. Even the Pathan brothers may play,” he said.

BCCI does not allow its active players to play in overseas T20 leagues. However, the likes of Irfan, Munaf and Praveen have already retired from the game and are unlikely to play any problem in obtaining the No Objection Certificates for playing in LPL.
