It was confirmed by Somerset County Club that Australian recruit Matt Renshaw will return home after fracturing his finger. The southpaw made his Test debut for Australia a couple of years back.

Moreover, Renshaw injured his finger during his county’s Championship game against Surrey at Guildford. It will surely be a massive blow for a renowned club like Somerset. He is an international talent and his absence will be felt.

“Matt sustained a fracture on the top of his finger,” Cricbuzz quoted Head Coach Jason Kerr as saying.

The resolute left-handed batsman Renshaw was first signed as a replacement for his national teammate Cameron Bancroft.

“After speaking with Cricket Australia (CA) it has been agreed that he will return to Australia sooner rather than later. Sadly for us, that means it is the end of his time with Somerset this season,” Kerr added.

Cricket Australia suspended Bancroft for nine months following the ball-tampering fiasco in Cape Town a few months ago.

SuperSport Broadcast caught Bancroft red-handed while trying to rub the ball with a sandpaper. The hatred which the trio received following the incident was unprecedented.

Coming back to Renshaw, the southpaw had a good maiden season for Somerset. He scored 513 runs in the Championship at an impressive average of 51.30. He also smashed three centuries in the process.

However, Renshaw had a pretty moderate season for Somerset during the Royal London Cup. He ended up scoring just 180 runs in six matches.

It is a huge blow to us, says head coach Jason Kerr

“It’s a huge blow to us because he has been brilliant both on and off the field,” Kerr stated.

“He fitted into the dressing room very well. A player of that calibre is going to be missed. However, it does create an opportunity for somebody else to come in and step up, so from that point of view it’s quite exciting,” he further added.

Matt Renshaw will automatically walk into the Test side in the absence of David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

However, he has to be consistent in order to replace Bancroft permanently. Hence he will definitely look to return strong from the injury.
