Among the many records Mumbai Indians created or broke with their triumph in the just-concluded IPL 2020, one was the ending their even-year jinx in the tournament. Before their latest triumph, Mumbai Indians had won their last four titles in odd years.

The Mumbai-based franchise had won their first IPL title in 2013, after which they won only in odd years – 2015, 2017 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, the odds were against them when they took the field to defend their IPL title. But the Rohit Sharma-led side defied all the odds and went on to beat Delhi Capitals in the final to clinch their first IPL title in an even year.

After topping the league stages with 18 points from 14 matches and easing to the final with a dominant win over Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 1, Mumbai Indians thrashed the same opponent by five wickets to become the first team to win the IPL times. They also became the second team to defend the IPL title.

Rohit Sharma on winning in even year:

A couple of days after sealing the IPL title, Rohit Sharma took to Twitter to react hilariously to his team’s triumph in the even year. The Mumbai Indians skipper shared an old advertisement as he said his side ‘went even this season’. The commercial was launched by broadcasters before the start of IPL 2020.

In the commercial, Rohit Sharma is seen talking to his superstitious Mama Ji (Uncle) about the ‘odd-even’ theory. The uncle is seen constantly trying to change the odd-numbered things around Rohit and make them even-numbered before the batsman made him understand that he was being made a fool as IPL 13 is itself odd.

Sharing the old commercial, Rohit Sharma, who top-scored in the final, wrote: “We indeed went even this season. Bola tha aapko mamu inki ganit weak hai”.
