The trademark of Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) successful campaign this season of Indian Premier League (IPL) has been distinct players standing up, on different occasions to guide their team towards victory.

Whether it was Dwayne Bravo in the first match, or Sam Billings against Kolkata Knight Riders, or Faf du Plessis in the first qualifier, there have been a number of different individuals responsible for the collective effort on their comeback trail.

Another important aspect regarding CSK’s season was their selection strategy during the two-day mega-auction in January, this year.

The men in yellow were written off prior to the start of the tournament, as there were nine players in their squad above 30.

Few in the twilight of the career, it turned outm to be a masterstroke from Stephen Fleming and co. The likes of Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were the standout performers in a format which often demands the agility of youth.

Since starting his IPL career, South African captain Faf du Plessis represented the Super Kings. After CSK were relegated for a couple of years, he played under Dhoni again at the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant(s).

During the auction, Fleming used the Right to Match (RTM) card to retain the services of the Proteas. Du Plessis obliged to the entrusted value with a spirited performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) which took them to the finals of IPL.
