IPL 2018: Kolkata Knight Riders Announce Their Captain
Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Dinesh Karthik as their captain for the upcoming season of IPL.
The Indian batsman was one of the two contenders for the job along with Robin Uthappa and in the end, won the race.
This will be the first time when Karthik will take over the job of the captain on the permanenet basis.
He has previously worked as vice-captain of Delhi Daredevils.
Karthik also led the side when captain Kevin Pietersen was injured, but as a stand-in captain.
He will be playing for KKR for the first time and will straightaway take over the charge of the team.
He was bought by the franchise for an amount of Rs 7.40 Crore.
One of the major reasons for the team opting for Karthik could be the form.
Uthappa is going through a dry run and hasn’t performed well in domestic cricket since switching over his base to Saurashtra from Karnataka, before the start of the season.
Karthik, on the other hand, went onto make his comeback in the national side last year.
He is also a part of the team for Nidahas Trophy, which could really define his international career.
With the Indian team looking set to carry bakup for MS Dhoni till 2019 World Cup, – with DK as the strongest contender – his international experience will always come into play during IPL.
In total, Karthik has played 152 IPL games in which he has scored 2903 runs at 24.81.
He also has 88 catches and 26 stumpings.
Karthik has an experience of leading his state team, Tamil Nadu, in domestic cricket.
He will succeed Gautam Gambhir in the job.
Gambhir led the Kolkata based franchise in past seven seasons but was not retained by the franchise.
As the KKR CEO, Venky Mysore had revealed, Gambhir had himself asked to be not retained by KKR as he wanted to play for his home side
He has already been named as the captain of Delhi Daredevils.
The two-time IPL champion team will face Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first game of the season on April 8.
