IPL 2019: Injury Ends Rohit Sharma's Incredible Streak For Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma was forced to miss Mumbai Indians game against Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday at the Wankhede Stadium. The Mumbai Indians skipper had to sit out the game after he suffered an injury on the game. After a long hit in the nets, Rohit Sharma was working out in the outfield when he was seen collapsing to the ground, clutching his right thigh.

The injury looked serious as Rohit was grimacing in pain as his teammates and the support staff rushed to his aid. Helped by team physio Nitin Patel, he picked himself up and hobbled around the boundary rope, making a slow, painful walk to the dressing room. During his walk off the field, he stopped and took a break, leaning on the electronic hoarding around the boundary for support.  The Mumbai Indians skipper then climbed the steps on the side of the visitors’ dressing room that are closer to reach than his team’s dressing room.

“Rohit Sharma had suffered right leg muscle spasm yesterday during training. Rohit has recovered significantly in past 24 hours. As a precautionary measure, Mumbai Indians management has decided to rest Rohit for one match,” the team management revealed in a statement.

In his absence, Kieron Pollard is leading the side whole uncapped Siddhesh Lad is making his debut in the IPL. Mumbai Indians will be hoping that the absence of their talismanic skipper do not cost them big.

Meanwhile, the injury brought an end to Rohit Sharma’s incredible run with the Mumbai Indians that began way back in 2011 when the franchise had traded him from the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. This is the first-ever game Rohit has missed a match for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. The last game he was on the bench in this tournament was against Chennai Super Kings on May 27, 2008.

So far, Rohit has has played 165 successive IPL games (32 for Deccan Chargers and 133 for Mumbai Indians). His 133 consecutive appearances for Mumbai is second only to Raina’s 134 games for a single franchise (Chennai Super Kings).
