As the World Cup is inching closer, the Indian team-management must be holding its breath, praying that none of the World Cup-bound players get injured in the ongoing IPL. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah and MS Dhoni have already given some injury scares to the team-management. And on Friday, Mohammed Shami was the latest to join the list. Playing for Kings XI Punjab against Kolkata Knight Riders, the right-arm pacer seemed to have hurt his neck.

The incident took place on the fifth ball of the third over.  The India pacer, who made his comeback to the ODI team recently and is part of the World Cup squad, bowled a fuller-length delivery to Chris Lynn. Lynn, in reply, mistimed the shot which bounced in front of Shami before ballooning over him behind the non-striker’s end. And in an attempt to save the ball, Shami made a full-fledged jump.

But in doing so, he seemed to have hurt his neck as he was seen grimacing in pain as soon as he landed. Shami was clearly in discomfort as his teammates ran towards him. Just moments later, the physio also came to the ground to attend him. Shami managed to bowl the final delivery but clearly looked in discomfort which is bound to make the Indian camp worried. Team India will be desperately hoping that the injury is not serious at all.

A serious injury could also be a setback for Kings XI Punjab who have struggled with injuries throughout. Before the start of the game against Knight Riders, Kings XI coach Mike Hesson had also rued about the loss of players due to injury.

“Sticking with the same players is the ideal scenario, but we have had 14 injuries in this campaign. We have one injury and often we had to make two changes. There have been four occasions when we wanted to roll the same eleven but haven’t been able to due to injury. So those factors we have to consider,” he had said.
