IPL 2020: Aakash Chopra Worried About The Spin-Bowling Department Of Mumbai Indians

Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra has come with a sea of analysis and predictions ahead of the 13th edition of IPL. The 2020 season of IPL will commence from the 19th of September in the UAE. The BCCI has also announced the schedule of the same, which means the stage is almost set for the extravaganza. Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra has analysed the spin-bowling department of defending champions, Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians have frontline options in the form of Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar, who have shown to be highly effective. However, they do not boast of quality back-up choices in case one of them gets injured. The likes of Anukul Roy and Jayant Yadav are not experienced enough. Moreover, it was also surprising to see Mumbai opt for James Pattinson when Lasith Malinga opted out of this year’s edition.

Aakash Chopra highlighted that since all the matches will take place in Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, the pitches will suffer wear and tear over time. Hence, one needs depth in the spin-bowling department. The 42-year old conceded that Mumbai do not have the quality or quantity of spin bowlers needed in these conditions.

“One real weakness that comes to mind, keeping in mind that IPL 2020 is about to happen in the UAE and only on three grounds, is that the pitches will get tired over a period of time. There, you need a lot of depth in spin bowling. But MI do not have that depth in their spin bowling. Neither do they have the quality nor the quantity of spin bowling required in these conditions,” Aakash told in his Youtube channel.

The cricketer-turned-commentator added that the likes of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Chahar have an immense opportunity to shine in this year’s edition. He feels that Suryakumar is very close to making it to the national team and so is Ishan Ishan, who has remained a consistent performer and a productive IPL season can bring him even closer.

“Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Chahar have a great opportunity to shine this IPL season. Surya is very close to playing for India. Ishan Kishan has also been a consistent performer of late and a good IPL can bring him in the reckoning for the Indian team,” the 42-year old asserted.

Aakash concluded by saying that if Rahul Chahar enjoys a good season, it would be consecutive flourishing ones for him. While the leggie already has an Indian cap, a fruitful 2020 edition, Chahar would be with the Indian team for a long time.

“If Rahul Chahar has a brilliant IPL 2020, then it would be two consecutive IPL seasons that were good for him. He has got an India cap already but he will be able to be associated with the Indian team for long only when he has a good IPL 2020,” he added.
