Dinesh Karthik, on Friday, dropped a huge surprise by stepping down as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in the middle of the ongoing IPL season. Karthik decided to step down from his position as the captain of the side “with a view to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause”.

Karthik was leading the side from the 2018 season when he replaced the legendary Gautam Gambhir. In his maiden season, he led the team to the playoffs. But last year, KKR crashed out at the league stage and are currently fourth in the points table with four wins from seven games.

Karthik was facing the heat for his poor display with the bat so far in IPL 2020.  He is averaging 15.42 for his 108 runs so far in the IPL season. Out of those 108 runs, 58 came against Kings XI Punjab. Eoin Morgan has been named as Karthik’s replacement. The England skipper was named as KKR’s vice-captain at the start of this IPL.

Gautam Gambhir posts cryptic tweet:

Minutes after the news of Karthik handing over the captain to Morgan became public, Gautam Gambhir took to Twitter to post a cryptic tweet. Gautam Gambhir has been KKR’s most decorated captain in the history of the IPL. The batting legend had led the franchise from 2011 to 2017.

Under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, KKR qualified for the IPL playoffs and also made it to the Champions League Twenty20 for the first time in 2011.He eventually led the side to their first title in 2012. Two years later, he led the team to their second title, making KKR  one of the most successful teams in the leagues.

And it looks like Gautam Gambhir is not at all impressed with how things are going on in the KKR camp after his departure. The former KKR skipper did not explain what he meant with his tweet but the timing of the tweet does raise some eyebrows. Soon after Karthik took the decision of relinquishing the captaincy, Gautam Gambhir took to Twitter to write:

“It takes years to build a legacy but a minute to destroy it.”
