MS Dhoni’s batting positions in Chennai Super Kings’ first two games of IPL 2020 has surprised many. Before the start of the tournament, there were speculations that he might promote himself this season after Suresh Raina’s decision to pull out of the competition.

However, MS Dhoni has surprised everyone by demoting himself from his usual slot. In the first game against Mumbai Indians, he promoted the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran ahead of him although the move turned out to be an inspiring one.

But he was expected to bat higher in the just-concluded game against Rajasthan Royals where CSK were chasing an improbable 217. However, the CSK captain came out to bat at number seven after the likes of Curran and Kedar Jadhav. And although he hit three sixes in the final over during his knock of 29, it was not enough to prevent a 16-run defeat for his side.

Speaking at the end of the match, he revealed the reason behind his batting position. The veteran batsman revealed one of the reasons was that he has not batted for a long time. He also said that he wanted to give opportunity to Curran.

“I haven’t batted for a long time. 14-day quarantine doesn’t help (why he isn’t batting higher). Also wanted to try different things, give opportunities to Sam. Have the opportunity to try different things. If it doesn’t work, you can always go back to your strengths. Faf adapted very well. Something the batsmen will do, neglect square leg and go more towards long-on and long-off,” MS Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

As far as the game is concerned, CSK ended their innings on 200 for 6 after Royals posted a massive total of 216 for 7, the highest score of IPL 2020 so far. For Royals, Sanju Samson starred with the bat, scoring 74 off just 32 while Steve Smith scored fifty too before Jofra Archer hit four sixes in the final over.
