The first game of IPL 2020 lived up to its expectations as Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians played out another thriller. In the end, CSK beat the defending champions by five wickets to start their campaign on a winning note. With the win, CSK also ended their five-match losing streak against the Mumbai-based outfit.

Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians posted 162 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs with Saurabh Tiwary’s 42 being the highest score. For CSK, Lungi Ngidi picked up three wickets while Deepak Chahar and Ravindra Jadeja picked two apiece.

In reply, CSK chased down the total with four balls remaining. The three-time champions were off to a poor start with their openers Shane Watson and Murali Vijay departing quickly with just six runs on the board. However, Ambati Rayudu (71) and Faf du Plessis (58*) scored fine fifties while sharing a 115-run stand to make sure CSK start their campaign with a win.

Virender Sehwag’s reaction:

Soon after the game ended, former India batsman Virender Sehwag took to Twitter to react to the match. He was delighted with the way the IPL started before stating that while Rayudu and du Plessis were brilliant, Sam Curran’s cameo made the difference in the end.

Curran indeed played a knock that settled the game in CSK’s favour. The CSK debutant was promoted at number six and he justified the faith by slamming two sixes and a four to score 18 runs off just 6 balls. CSK needed 29 from 17 when he came out to bat and when he departed in the 19th over, the equation was 10 from 10. The left-arm pacer also picked up the important wicket of Quinton de Kock earlier in the match.

“Great start to the IPL. Looks like it’s going to be a cracker of a tournament. Rayudu and Du plessis were brilliant but Sam Curran’s cameo in the end was the difference. Idli beats Vada Pav again,” wrote Virender Sehwag.
