Indian vice-captain and the skipper of Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League, Rohit Sharma has added another feather in his cap as he became the third batsman in the history of IPL to score 5000 runs in the tournament. On Thursday, Mumbai Indians took on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Matchday 13 of IPL 2020.

KXIP won the toss and elected to field first in what is a crucial tie for both the teams as both the teams have not had a decent start to this year’s IPL. Mumbai Indians suffered an early shocker in the first innings as their wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock failed once again with the bat and was dismissed in the first over itself as Sheldon Cottrell bowled him out on the fifth delivery.

IPL 2020: Rohit Sharma Becomes Only The Third Player To Score 5000 Runs In The Tournament

Rohit Sharma has become the third batsman in the history of IPL to score 5000 runs in the tournament. Before this match, Rohit Sharma (4998 runs) was two runs behind to complete 5000 IPL runs. Prior to him, only Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina had achieved this feat in the cricket carnival of IPL.

In IPL 2019,  Suresh Raina created history by becoming the first batsman to score 5000 IPL runs. The left-handed batsman reached that milestone in 173 innings, while it was his 177th IPL match. Five days later,  Virat Kohli became the second but fastest batsman to complete 5000 IPL runs. It was the 157th IPL innings and 165th IPL match for the right-handed batsman Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma Has Been One Of The Most Decorated Players In IPL History

Rohit Sharma is the most successful captain and player in IPL’s 12-year long history. The Mumbaikar has won four titles as a captain. He led Mumbai Indians to victory in the 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 edition of the cash-rich tournament. His maiden IPL title came in IPL 2009 when he represented Deccan Chargers. He was also awarded as the Emerging Player Of The Season in his maiden IPL title run.

Mumbai Indians, however, have failed to find their feet in IPL 2020 so far as they have won only one game out of the three matches that they have played so far. They will certainly look to win their tie against Kings XI Punjab and rise through the ranks in the IPL 2020 points table.
