Even before the 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has hit the floors, a major controversy has surrounded the cash-rich league.
Just a few days ahead of the upcoming edition, the IPL governing council has miffed the franchises by deciding to halve the amount of money given to the four teams that reach the play-offs of the league.

The thirteenth edition of the league gets underway on March 29 with defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium.
In a unilateral decision, the IPL and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have decided that the four franchises in playoffs, which earlier shared Rs 50 crore between them, will now share Rs 25 crore.
This decision was taken without prior consultation with the franchises and now they have decided to discuss it with the board as the franchises are extremely unhappy.

“We are unhappy that the play-off standing fund has been halved. We were not even consulted. The franchisees have been discussing it informally and will soon have a formal meeting to discuss the issue,” an official from a South-based franchise said.

“It is a big hit. We are discussing it internally as well as with other teams. All the teams are meeting soon to discuss it,” said an official from another franchise.
The festival of cricket in India – Indian Premier League (IPL) will raise its curtains from 29th March this year and it will culminate with the grand finale on May 24.
