Rajasthan Royals (RR) coach Kumar Sangakkara shared his opinion on the no-ball controversy which marred the finish of their IPL 2022 game against Delhi Capitals, which RR ended up winning by 15 runs and went to the top of the points table on April 22, 2022.

With 36 runs needed in the final over of the game, Delhi Capitals batter Rovman Powell smashed West Indies teammate Obed McCoy for three sixes to get the equation down to 18 runs off three deliveries.

However, things became heated as the third ball on which Powell hit a six, was a waist-high full toss and the DC batters and camp expected it to be called a no-ball. When the on-field umpire didn’t give it a no-ball, the Powell and Kuldeep Yadav urged the on-field umpires to refer it to the third umpire.

The same thing was being gestured by the DC dugout and Rishabh Pant animatedly gestures Powell and Kuldeep to come off the field, if the matter was not going to be referred to the TV umpire.

I Think It Is The Umpires That Control The Game: Kumar Sangakkara

Speaking on this matter, RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara opined that the umpires control the game and he cannot dictate what is acceptable and what is not.

“I think it is the umpires that control the game. There is a lot of pressure and tension in the IPL. Things can go either way, when you have a situation like that, in the end, the umpires control the situation. And the game went on.

“That’s how I look at it. I don’t think I can really dictate what is acceptable and what’s not,” said Kumar Sangakkara in a press conference.

“At the end of the day, it is the players out there who play and the umpires have a tough job in terms of calling the game and our job as support staff is basically to support the players out there and let the game be played,” said Sangakkara.
