IPL : Five Forgotten Heroes of the Tournament

The Indian Premier League (IPL) in its 12the edition and this tournament have given the cricket fans many things to cherish. We have got many international cricketers who are dominating world cricket after making a mark in the IPL. Besides, we have also witnessed one-season wonders who have emerged out of the blue only to fade away soon.

These players have come into the tournament like the next big things and have earned praise from all cricketing pundits across the length and breadth of the world. However, they have failed to offer consistency and have faded away very soon. Also, not making the headlines regularly in the Ranji season didn’t help either. As a result, these yesteryear heroes were overlooked by the franchise owners and forgotten by fans and cricket lovers.

On the context, let us take a look at the five forgotten heroes of IPL

SWAPNIL ASNODKAR

The short-height dynamo from Kerala made his debut in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural edition. He forged a strong opening partnership with former South African captain Graeme Smith. In the edition of the tournament, they had scored 418 runs together at an average of 59.71 – the highest of the competition.

In the seven IPL matches, he scored 244 runs at 34.86 with a strike rate of 127.08. On his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders, he scored 60 runs from 34 balls. He last played in the 2011 season of IPL but failed to make a mark and since then, didn’t earn any contract.

Meanwhile, Asnodkar still plays for Goa in the domestic circuit but couldn’t revive that form.

Manvinder Bisla’s knock in the IPL final for Kolkata Knight Riders against the Chennai Super Kings was his best knock in the tournament. Bisla joined Kolkata in 2011 and kept wicket as Brad Haddin was yet to join the team. He opened the batting with former South African Jacques Kallis and even shared a partnership of 145 with Kallis. In that edition of the league, he played seven matches scoring 213 runs with one half-century in the final.

Bisla was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders till 2014, and after that, he represented for the Royal Challengers Bangalore back in the year 2015 but played only two matches for them.

The 34-year-old last played a List A game in 2017.

KAMRAN KHAN

A bowler with an unusual action burst on to the international scene an impressed with his express pace in the IPL. The left-arm fast bowler made his debut IPL even before making his first-class debut. After impressing Darren Berry, the Rajasthan director of coaching, in a local T20 tournament, Khan was given a contract in the second season of IPL for Rajasthan.

Later on, Kamran represented Pune Warriors India in the 2013 edition of the IPL. He played only one game for the Sourav Ganguly-led franchise and never featured again.

However, after 2013 he left cricket for some unknown reasons.

PAUL VALTHATY

Paul Valthaty grabbed all the headlines of all the news daily after his magnificent century in IPL 2011 for the Kings XI Punjab. The talented right-handed batsman opened the innings for Punjab in the 2011 and 2012 edition. However, Punjab released the talented batsman after the 2012 edition and ever since he didn’t find any IPL franchise.

In his IPL career, Valthaty amassed 505 runs in 23 matches at an average of 23 with a century and a couple of the fifties. He was one of the few players to register four wickets and a fifty in same IPL matches. Valthaty failed to impress in the 2012 IPL and got in the crowd of talented young players.

SIDDHARTH TRIVEDI

Siddharth Kaul impressed in the very first edition of the Indian Premier League in 20018. Back then, Rajasthan Royals skipper seemed super impressed with the young Indian fast bowler. Bowling with a slightly tilted action, Trivedi bowled a tight line and length.

The young fast bowler combined well with Sohail Tanvir to help Rajasthan Royals clinch the inaugural season of the IPL. Many tipped Trivedi to be the next big of Indian cricket; however, he couldn’t make a mark significant mark in the seasons falling behind in the eyes of the selectors.

After a below par 2013 campaign, Trivedi lost his shape and went out of contention. He also admitted taking money from the fixers during the 2013 IPL scandal.
