Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has opened up on a cheeky trait of Sourav Ganguly. It was his quality of turning up late for the toss that Irfan Pathan mentioned during chat in the Star Sports’ show cricket Connected. The Baroda-born cricketer iterated an incident from the 2003-04 Border Gavaskar Trophy contested in Australia.
Despite being one of the greatest and respected Indian captains, Sourav Ganguly has been part of some hilarious incidents. Perhaps, more than a decade ago, on this day, the BCCI President, took off his jersey and waved it off to celebrate India’s win. It came after India gunned down the chase of 326 to win from behind by two wickets successfully against England in 2002 at the final of the Natwest Trophy at the Lord’s.
Pathan reminisced the 2003-04 Border Gavaskar Trophy, which happened to be his first tour of Australia. The 35-year-old mentioned he would remember when it is time for the toss and Ganguly used to look at the clock while the team manager would remind him of the same.
“On my first tour of Australia, when he made Steve Waugh wait, I remember it clearly. I would be in the dressing room and I remember whenever it was time for the toss, Dada used to look at the clock, and the manager would remind him that it’s time to go out for the toss,” Irfan Pathan said.
Irfan Pathan confesses not even Sachin Tendulkar could convince Dada to go in time for the toss:
“During the Sydney Test, I remember it was Sachin paaji who said ‘Dada, you should go. It’s time for the toss’. But Dada would take his sweet time to put on his shoes, sweater; adjusting his cap. When a person is getting late, the pressure becomes visible on his face but Dada would never be in a hurry,” Irfan Pathan added.
