Shubman Gill has been one of the few players, who has been escalated fast into the Indian National Cricket Team. However, it was purely a right call based on the performances he displayed for India across the globe for various teams. He got the backing from Rahul Dravid, who helped him to make the transition easily to the highest level. All this landed him in the Indian team and made his debut by receiving the cap from MS Dhoni.
The series against Kiwis didn’t go well for the youngster but he gained a lot of confidence by rubbing the shoulders with great personalities in the dressing room. Speaking of the same, Gill quoted that he never thought that it would come pretty quickly to him. He also revealed that it was a surreal feeling when Ravi Shastri said him regarding his debut.
”Life’s changed a lot in terms of the experience I am gaining, even at a higher level. Early last year, when I was preparing for the (U-19) World Cup, I would think if I do well here, it may lead to more opportunities. But I hadn’t imagined all this would happen so soon,” Shubman Gill said to SportStar.
Rahul Dravid Sir helped me a lot – Shubman Gill
Further, the youngster quoted that the legendary Rahul Dravid has helped him a lot in order to make a good transition. He went on to add saying that Dravid has got the great knowledge on the game, who helps youngsters to know their flaws and get them done pretty quickly.
He also highlighted that fact that a player’s presence in the International team is not all about the confidence but also regarding the fitness levels and fielding standards of the players. Gill revealed that Dravid will let the youngster understand the importance of certain aspects.
”Rahul [Dravid] sir has helped a lot in this transition. He is aware of what a youngster needs to do to adjust to higher levels of cricket. It’s not only about batting. Many times, you lack fitness, or the fielding standards are not up to international level. One needs to match the highest standards in all aspects of the game,” he said.
”He helped me realise all that. Besides, I also learnt how to handle success and failures from him. Also, at times when a youngster reaches the highest level, he starts taking it easy and doesn’t work as hard in the nets as earlier. I feel it’s important to take the additional effort in other aspects but you cannot compromise on your basic work ethic if you have to sustain at a higher level,” Gill added.
It was amazing to receive the cap from MS Dhoni Bhai:
Moreover, it was the head coach Ravi Shastri, who revealed Shubman Gill regarding his debut for the team. Gill quoted that it was a surreal experience and receiving the cap from the stalwart Mahendra Singh Dhoni is icing on the cake.
”It was an overwhelming experience. When Ravi [Shastri] sir told me after the third match I would play the next one, it was a surreal feeling. To take the field with players whom you have idolized since childhood, to get the India cap from Mahi Bhai, it was amazing,” he inferred.
Well, Shubman Gill had a great career so far in domestic cricket and only a few games away from playing for Indian National Cricket Team. Hopefully, he will break into the side as quickly as possible.
